FAQ
Where is Orkney?
Orkney is an archipelago in the North Sea off the north coast of Scotland. It consists of 70 islands of varying sizes, 17 of which are inhabited. Orkney has a population of about 20,000, most of whom live in the two main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. For more information, please visit the Visit Orkney website or Orkneyjar.
If you plan to fly to Orkney, it is advisable that you look into booking travel as soon as you can - this will give you the chance of getting cheaper fares. However, we know that, for domestic travel, most airlines and ferry companies haven't released their timetables for next summer yet. We'll try to keep an eye on this and put a note on the site when flights and sailings are available. You can find more information about the options available to you on the 'Travel' section of this site. When should we book accommodation?
We recommend that you look into booking accommodation as soon as possible. Orkney is a very popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer months, and accommodation gets snapped up fast. You can find more information about the options available to you on the 'Accommodation' section of this site. How long should we stay?
Obviously, this is entirely at your discretion. However, we would advise that you arrive at least the day before the wedding, if not two days before. This is because transport to Orkney from mainland Scotland is dependent on the weather: in especially rough seas the boats may not sail and in foggy conditions, the planes may be unable to land. We have chosen to have the wedding in July to ensure that the chances of having such weather are reduced, but everyone knows what Scottish weather can be like! Take a look at the Visit Orkney site to find out what there is to see and do in Orkney while you're there - there's something for everyone. How long does it take to drive to Orkney?
This depends where you're driving from, and which route you're taking! Driving from Edinburgh to the north of Scotland (Scrabster, Gills Bay or John O' Groats) via Inverness will take around 6.5 to 7 hours, not accounting for breaks. Driving from Glasgow will take a little longer. The various boats from the north coast to Orkney take between 40 minutes and 1.5 hours. Driving from Edinburgh to Aberdeen will take you around three hours. The ferry from Aberdeen to Kirkwall then takes 6 hours. If you are driving from Ireland, the route from Stranraer/Cairnryan to Edinburgh takes about 3 hours, assuming you drive on the motorways and again, not accounting for breaks.
